Trick 'r Treat

Posted : 1 month, 2 weeks ago on 8 October 2009 11:21 (A review of Trick 'r Treat)

This is one of the better horror movies I've seen in the last couple of years. There are a lot of familiar faces in the cast. The dialogue was great. It was perfectly paced. This is a great movie to get you in the halloween spirit.

Night Train

Posted : 4 months, 1 week ago on 11 July 2009 09:42 (A review of Night Train)

What would you do to have your wildest dreams come true? This movie looks at the extent that some people will go through to achieve them. It starts ordinarily enough. A few people are on a train going home on christmas eve. A man overdoses oh pills and vodka. The main characters find a box on him and proceeds to each take a look. This is where the movie take a turn similar to an old episode of the Twilight Zone. The remainder of the movie revolves around the characters' greed and suspicion tear them and each other apart.

This film is not without problems. There is a large suspension of belief curve to it. First, the train appears to be pretty large yet there are only a hand full of passengers. The side characters are really only there to be obstacles for the three main characters. The performances of the actors are mixed. I thought that Leelee Sobieski did a very good job. Danny Glover gave one of his standard is somewhat unsurprising performances. I thought that Steve Zahn gave a pretty weak performance. The movie does through in some plot twists. Too bad they wasn't unexpected.

It seems like I found a lot wrong with the movie. This movie isn't for everyone but if you can ignore the logical inaccuracies and the plot twist, what you are left with is a pretty good morality tale.

Feast III

Posted : 6 months, 1 week ago on 17 May 2009 09:35 (A review of Feast III: The Happy Finish [DVD] [2008] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC])

Maybe you know the movie. The one so full of symbolism that you have to watch it multiple times to be sure that you got the true meaning of it. The one that has you building an emotional attachment to the characters. A truly thought provoking film. This is not that movie. But then you probably realized that. If you've seen either of the first two films you know what to expect. Feast III is really meant to be watched for one reason, to watch people die bloodily. It delivers that. If you liked the first two movies this one is more of the same. The only reason that I didn't like this one as well is because most of the interesting characters that have been introduced in the first two has been killed off and I didn't find the new characters as interesting. It was good for a laugh.

House

Posted : 6 months, 1 week ago on 16 May 2009 08:40 (A review of House)

Christian propaganda not so cleverly disguised as a horror film. I had a bad feeling about the movie when it opened with a bible quote. The movie didn't surprise.

After getting a couple of flat tires a couple end up at a bed and breakfast. Another couple has already arrived after also flattening a tire. The bed and breakfast is run by your stereotypically "creepy" family. Killer shows up with shotgun saying the only way to get out of the house is to deliver a body by sunrise. The family is naturally batshit crazy. I'll spoil the ending by saying that one couple dies and the other realizes the errors of their sinful ways. And I'm guessing that the little girl is supposed to be an angel or some other such nonsense. The "twist" at the end of the movie is both very obvious and been done to death. And also done much better.

This movie is not worth watching. The acting is very bad, even by cheesy horror movie standards. If for whatever reason you don't watch R rated movies but still like horror, there are many better movies out there in the PG/PG13 area such as The Uninvited. They might not be great movies but they will be good in comparison.

Babylon 5 - The Complete Second Season

Posted : 11 months, 1 week ago on 14 December 2008 02:02 (A review of Babylon 5 - The Complete Second Season)

The second season takes the plot lines from the first season and starts expanding on them. By the end of this season the direction of the show has been established. Character development still occurs throughout this and the rest of the seasons. This keeps the characters interesting and seeming real. There is some general plot spoilers in the rest of the review.

Sinclair gets replaced by John Sheridan as the commander of the station. We start to see raising conflict between Earth/Psi Corps and the outer colonies, including Babylon 5, beginning with the assassination of the President of the Earth Alliance leading to the Vice President assuming the role. Conflict between the Narn and the Centauri escalate leading to full-scale war and the eventual downfall of the Narn empire. Increasing anti-alien sentiment leads to the creation of the Nightwatch, a paramilitary group that works for President Clark.

The Shadow's influence continues to grow, particularly in the Narn/Centauri war. Some of the Shadow's past are also revealed. The Vorlons enlist the help of Sheridan for the coming Shadow War.

Babylon 5: The Complete First Season

Posted : 11 months, 1 week ago on 14 December 2008 07:42 (A review of Babylon 5 - The Complete First Season)

Unsurprisingly, the first season of Babylon 5 was mostly about introducing the characters and the plot threads that would be developed throughout the next four seasons. Many of the episodes tend to be episodic dealing with some emergency that threatens the station and its resolution or character development plots. We are also giving a lot of the details that led to the creation of the Babylon stations. Most notably among this was the Earth/Minbari war. This storyline would be expanded into the movie In The Beginning.

Other plot lines that are introduced this season is the tension between the Narn and the Centauri which escalates throughout the next season. The Shadows and Vorlons are also introduced. They are at the center of a lot of the plot for the following seasons.

Prince Caspian

Posted : 11 months, 2 weeks ago on 6 December 2008 09:33 (A review of The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian)

The movie continued the story started in the first movie. It has been a year since the children had returned from Narnia and are having trouble readjusting to life in the "real" world. Just when they had about given up hope on returning they are whisked back for another adventure. Many centuries has passed in Narnian time. During this period the country had been invaded and the Narnians, talking creatures and other mythical animals/people, have been pushed to the brink of extension. Prince Caspian's uncle attempts to have him killed so that he can take the throne. The movie is mostly about the struggle to return the crown to Caspian and the land to the Narnians.

The movie is more visually complex than the first. The battles are really well done. I didn't notice many glaring plot deviations from the book but it's been nearly twenty years since I'd read it. Overall, a very good movie.

Wanted

Posted : 11 months, 3 weeks ago on 4 December 2008 11:00 (A review of Wanted (Single-Disc Widescreen Edition))

This movie is about what you would expect. It has lots of gunfights, car chases, and special effects. The effects look really good. The bullet effect gimmick wasn't anything special but it wasn't annoying either.

The story wasn't anything special. A guy that is very unhappy with his life finds out that he has the ability to speed his relative time up so that others around him appear to be moving in slow motion. He is asked to join a society, the Fraternity, of assassins made up of others with the same ability. There is a rogue agent killing other members that only he can stop.

While that plot was pretty generic, it was strong enough to hold the movie together. The point of movies like this is the action anyway. There is plenty of that.

MXC Volume 4 & 5

Posted : 1 year ago on 19 November 2008 11:03 (A review of MXC: Most Extreme Elimination Challenge, Volume 4 & 5)

There isn't much to say about this dvd set. If you liked the previous seasons, or sets for those that didn't watch in on tv, then you will like this set. The transfer looks good and the episodes are as funny as ever. I was disappointed to find out that the "Almost Live" episode was not included. I don't know why they didn't release it.

Hellboy 2

Posted : 1 year ago on 11 November 2008 10:48 (A review of Hellboy II: The Golden Army (Widescreen))

Hellboy 2 was a great movie. Ron Perlman was great as always. Selma Blair was also good. Like the first movie, they did a great job of blending the action, drama, and comedy. If you find yourself not really liking most of the superhero movies out there, give this one a try anyway. You may be surprised.

About my collections

My movie collection tends to be pretty diverse. In general I like horror, fantasy, science fiction, and some of everything else.

I tend to read books by authors like Steven King and Dean Kontz. I guess horror. I love the Necroscope series by Brian Lumley. I also enjoy fantasy and science fiction. A favorite science fiction series is the Ender's Game books, both the main series and the Shadows spinoff.

My music collection is almost all rock and 80s.
