Hellboy 2

Posted : 6 days, 9 hours ago on 11 November 2008 10:48 (A review of Hellboy II: The Golden Army (Widescreen))

Hellboy 2 was a great movie. Ron Perlman was great as always. Selma Blair was also good. Like the first movie, they did a great job of blending the action, drama, and comedy. If you find yourself not really liking most of the superhero movies out there, give this one a try anyway. You may be surprised.

Moscow Zero

Posted : 1 week, 5 days ago on 5 November 2008 09:34 (A review of Moscow Zero)

Don't bother with this movie. It mostly consisted of a group wondering around in a sewer looking for a gate to hell or some such. I never did figure out what the point was. The movie has next to no violence in it. That's fine if they succeed in making the atmosphere creepy. This movie also failed at that, at best it felt a little claustrophobic being in a sewer and all. There was no plot to speak of and I'm not sure what actually happened for the ending. However by this point I was just happy to see the credits roll. It's unusual for me to get absolutely no enjoyment out of a movie but this was one of those times.

Great

The songs on this CD was really funny. "Jingle Bombs" and "Song for Jeff" will differently be listened to often. If you enjoy watching the DVDs, you will likely enjoy the CD.

Get Smart

Posted : 1 week, 6 days ago on 4 November 2008 11:41 (A review of Get Smart (Single-Disc Widescreen Edition))

Having loved the original series I didn't expect this movie to be very good. I was wrong. Steve Carell and Anne Hathaway were perfect as Agents 86 and 99. The side characters were also worked perfectly. James Caan as the president was hilarious. The script was also great. Surprisingly, the movie did a great job of modernizing while staying faithful to the feel of the original show. Overall, it felt that I was watching an extended episode. What more could you want.

Witchblade

Posted : 1 month ago on 14 October 2008 11:09 (A review of Witchblade - The Complete Series)

While I won't argue that Witchblade is a great show, or even an average show, it's not as bad as most people will have you believe. The main issue I have with the show is that it seems to be trying to be two separate things. On one hand you have the supernatural aspect of the gauntlet and the mythology behind it. It also tries to be a crime drama. What you are left with is a storyline that makes no sense. The only thing the Witchblade gets used for is gunfights, it gives the wearer the ability to move faster than bullets and can deflect them, and the occasional sword fight.

There are some spoilers in the remainder of the review so don't read on if you haven't seen the show and actually care.

The show has so many cliches thrown in that it is amazing. There is a society of rogue cops, the evil billionaire that wants the power of the Witchblade for himself, an elite group of military trained assassins, and clones among many others. Two that actually ruined the show to a certain degree was that part of the way through the show she goes back in time and basically negates everything that happens up to that point. I'm guessing that this is the was the end of season one, but since I didn't watch the show when it was airing I don't know. The second was the existence of an item that is the Witchblade's opposite, only being able to be used by men. It is of course the Spear of Longinus. For those not up on the christian mythology that would supposedly be the spear that pierced Christ's side. So naturally there has to be a Witchblade v. Spear episode.

The cast did a decent job giving what they had to work with. If you find this show insanely cheap it might be worth watching, otherwise pass.

Posted : 4 months, 3 weeks ago on 26 June 2008 10:16 (A review of Universal Soldier (Special Edition))

Van Damme makes basically two types of action films. The science fiction/action movies and tournament fighting movies. All of the movies in each type are almost identical except for very small changes. That doesn't make the films bad really, but they do get repetitive.

Universal Soldier is one of his better science fiction movies. Van Damme plays a soldier who was killed by his commanding officer while trying to keep a civilian being killed during the Vietnam war. The commanding officer was also killed. A couple of decades later the two are brought back to be universal soldiers, reanimated corpses that are used in the place of live troops. These UniSols are basically indestructible except for a tendency to overheat. Apparently, whatever method being used to reanimate them also causes their bodies to run at high above normal body temperatures. The other main flaw is that sometimes they start remembering their past, mostly what led up to their death.

During the course of one of their missions, the UniSols attract the attention of a reporter. Refusing to let the story go, she decides to follow them back to their base. This leads to her and the camera man being captured since the scientists behind the project doesn't want the story to get out. After having a flashback to the Vietnam war, Damme's character decides to disobey orders to save the reporter. This sets up the chase that lasts for the rest of the movie.

The movie is about what you would expect. The action/fight scenes are pretty well done. There is no surprises from Damme's acting. Lundgren was amusing as the bad guy. I thought that Ally Walker did a really good job with the role she was given. I enjoyed this movie, but if you don't like Damme's other movies like Cyborg or Timecop you probably won't like this movie. If you did enjoy those movies, you may find this one a bit repetitive as its basically the same movie.

A mixture of slasher and comedy film that manages to pull it off. The comedy is strictly lowbrow and the acting is over the top, but that was what made this movie fun. The movie could be funny one minute then have a gory death scene the next, often in the same scene. If you enjoyed the humor in Supertroopers or movies like Idle Hands or Dead and Breakfast, you will like this movie.

If you are looking for a deep story or sophisticated humor this movie isn't for you. Instead what you get is a movie that is light on plot but is pretty fun to watch. I've never seen Larry's stand-up and didn't like Delta Farce but I found myself actually enjoying this movie. Even if you don't enjoy his type of comedy, you may find this movie funny.

Posted : 5 months, 1 week ago on 10 June 2008 08:58 (A review of Jumper [Blu-ray] [2008])

A movie based on some other form of media, such as a book in this case, usually just cut some of the parts out but keep the overall plot. This is not the case here. The book only had the one jumper and there was no paladins. I'm guessing these changes was made to make for a more action oriented movie. Whether you will like the changes will depend on what you are looking for.

I found the movie to be pretty fun to watch. The fight scenes looked pretty good. Jackson was great as the villain. Christensen did an alright job if a little flat at times. There wasn't much character development but it worked out better than if they had tried it. The most interesting character was the other jumper. I wouldn't be surprised if they made a couple of sequels.

Posted : 5 months, 1 week ago on 10 June 2008 08:38 (A review of The Air I Breathe)

This movie is about four people whose lives become entangled in deliberate or random ways. The setting is a generic metropolis that never gets named. Seemingly random events that occur in one of the parts can become a major plot twist in one of the later ones. The cast gave surprisingly solid performances for the most part. The only one that seemed flat was Emile Hirsch, surprisingly. Overall, I thought that the movie had the same feel as Sin City. It wasn't as good, but still well worth watching.

About my collections

My movie collection tends to be pretty diverse. In general I like horror, fantasy, science fiction, and some of everything else.

I tend to read books by authors like Steven King and Dean Kontz. I guess horror. I love the Necroscope series by Brian Lumley. I also enjoy fantasy and science fiction. A favorite science fiction series is the Ender's Game books, both the main series and the Shadows spinoff.

My music collection is almost all rock and 80s.
